wodrow (View posts) Posted: 11 Dec 1999 12:20AM Edited: 08 Mar 2006 06:20PM To all you Woodrow's out there would you please check the family name you are using!. Take "Woodrow Wilson" the 28th President of the USA. Did you know he is not a Woodrow!! He is a Wodrow. On his mothers side he came from a line of "Wodrow's" who migrated from Scotland. The patriach was Alexander Wodrow, a Scot who migrated to Virginia,USA sometime in the mid 1700's and died at the end of the First American Civil War. He was in politics and was the member for New Hampshire. The family "Wodrow" are well known Presbyterian Academics and historians. Alexander's father was Reverand Robert Wodrow

Just wanted to let you know that the "woodrow" which I believe is a married name for "Esther Cooper",, who was my grandmother's sister. Myrtle Eliza Cooper is my grandmother and I am trying to find out anything on her and the family. So far No luck.. does this family ring a bell with anyone. There is also a Beatrice Wellspeak, which I believe "wellspeak"is her married name too.

My research tells me the Woodrow's originally came from Norwich, England and the name was spelled Woodrow. When one of the clan moved to the Paisley, Scotland area the spelling was changed to Wodrow The first Wodrow I have in Paisley was Rev. Patrick Wodrow.

Dear Walt, Thanks for your message regarding the Wodrow surname. I have tried to contact you without success.
I'am afraid that your information is entirely incorrect in stating that the Wodrow's are a branch of the Woodrow who migrated from Norwich to Paisley in Scotland.
The Wodrow's are from a famous Scottish family which I can trace to 1580 in the Parish of Glasgow. The Rev Patrick Wodrow was not from Paisley but was from Mauchline, Ayrshire where he was the minister and became a friend to the Scottish Poet Robert Burns. He is in fact mentioned in a Poem by Robert Burns. Dr Patrick Wodrow is the 2nd son of the famous Scottish historian the Rev Robert Wodrow (1679-1734)and grandson of Professor James Wodrow the professor of divinity from Glasgow University. Robert Wodrow was for some years the Librarian at Glasgow University. A brother of the Rev Dr Patrick Wodrow, Alexander Wodrow migrated to America and settled in New Hampshire where he had an estate. Alexander died about the end of the first American war. A nephew of Alexander Wodrow, Andrew Wodrow (a grandson of the famous historian Rev Robert Wodrow)also migrated to America.
Wodrow Wilson the 28th President of the USA is directly descended from this branch of the Wodrow family.
There is a "Wodrow Society" in London. The Advocates Library in Edinburgh would be a good place to start.
But I'am afraid your assuptions are all wrong. Wodrow is not a branch of Woodrow and there are many people like "Woodrow Wilson" who are directly related to the Wodrow's but don't know it because some bureaucrat thought the name was phonetically better pronounced Woodrow. Best Regards, Bill Wodrow

The ancestors of the bearers of the Woodrow family name are thought have lived in ancient Anglo-Saxon England. They were first found in Yorkshire. Their name, however, derives from the woodrofe plant, a white flower whose leaves bear a sweet scent. The name indicates that the original bearer lived in an area in which the woodrofe was common.
Early Origins of the Woodrow family
The surname Woodrow was first found in Yorkshire where they held a family seat at Bolton on Deane, before and after the Norman Conquest in 1066.
