About Rev. William Henry Niles

1140. REV. WILLIAM HENRY8 NILES (WILLIAM ALLEN7, BENJAMIN6, SANDS5, SAMUEL4, SAMUEL3, NATHANIEL2, JOHN1) was born May 06, 1851 in Beaver Dam, Dodge Co., Wisconsin1528, and died June 04, 1924 in Roscoe, Sullivan Co., New York1528. He married FRANCIS ELIZABETH PRENTISS October 02, 1876, daughter of GEORGE PRENTISS and HARRIET BOWERS. She was born August 26, 1854 in Hornellsville, Steuben Co., New York, and died March 04, 1912 in Seaside, Monterey Co., California.

Notes for REV. WILLIAM HENRY NILES:

William Henry Niles was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin where his father was, at that time, preaching in the Presbyterian Church of that village. At birth he weighed ten pounds and a quarter. His uncle Dr. Henry S. West, afterwards a distinguished physician and surgeon of the A.B.C.F.M. was with his mother at the time of his birth. He was baptized within a year by Rev. M. Robertson and named for his father and uncle, being called Henry instead of William. He visited Binghamton, at his grandfather’s in his third year. His mother remembers with delight his infantile prattle. She can hear him now say “bi ba bee” for bye baby bunting. and again "for e wi lo," "A en, so et i be, ic be," "Li for de, ic wo ‘Ti it a ty" for "Ever with the Lord, Amen, so let it be. Life for the dead is in that word, ‘Tis immortality." May his old age be delightful as his infancy was beautiful.

At the age of eight years, W. H. Niles removed with his father and the rest of the family, from Watertown, Wis. to Binghamton, N. Y. on account of his grandfather’s death. The following Spring in 1860, he removed to Corning, N. Y. where his father occupied the pulpit of the Pres. church. Here, Henry lived and was a loving and obedient, Christian child. His memory was quick and retentive, and he was gentle and affectionate in all his ways. As a child, he was very fond of his sister Minnie, and very kind and attentive to her.

W. H. Niles first went to school at seven years old at a German school in Watertown, Wisconsin, where he learned quite a little of the German language. Afterwards, he attended school on Oak St. in Binghamton, at the public school, and surprised the family by reciting the whole of his small geography through at one recitation, one day, when detained at home by a slight illness. At Corning, he constantly attended the free Academy, and at the age of seventeen, he entered Cornell University of Ithaca, N.Y. where he remained boarding at his great aunt Higgins’, until he graduated from a four years’ course in the scientific department. He then remained home one year, in Hornellsville where he entered Auburn Theological Seminary, and graduated from that institution in May, 1876. Never once, during his school life, did he occasion his parents any anxiety, on account of evil conduct. Never once, did he treat his parents with any disrespect.

Rev. W. H. Niles left his home in Hornellsville in company with his wife, immediately after their marriage, for (Stephenville) Jacksboro, Jack Co., Texas, where he ministered with great acceptance to a Northern Pres. ch. for eleven years. Here he bought a peice of land (in Jacksboro) and built a small house and lived until the summer of 1887, when the family left Texas for Nelson, Nebraska, the capital of Nucholl’s Co. of that State. His change was made on a account of the health of his wife, which had become greatly impaired by the long residence in Texas.

On their way to Nelson, they visited for some time, (with) the family of their brother Mr. Silas W. Niles, in Omaha. The change was greatly beneficial to all the family, but especially so to Mrs. Niles, who quite recovered her original flesh and color. In the summer of 1888, Mrs. Prentiss, Mrs. W. H. Niles’ mother visited her children in Nelson, taking with her, her little grand-daughter, Mary W. Niles, to her home. She was with the family at the birth of their little son Frank S. Niles, and stayed with them two months, enjoying the visit exceedingly. (from "The Family Record - Rev. W. A. Niles, D. D." by Mrs. Mary E. Niles (May 29, 1884) - Written in Hornellsville in 1895 by Mrs. W. A. Niles)

From notes and dates on sermons by William Henry Niles it is assumed that the family returned to New York living in Sacketts Harbor by 1897, in New Berlin by 1908 (where his wife apparently died), and finally in Roscoe by 1913 until his death in 1924. His last dated sermon is May 18, 1924. He is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery. His wife is buried in New Berlin, New York.
