Son of Gabriel Wilkinson and Margery Baker, he entered Magdalen College at 14 and received his Master of Arts in 1632. He married first Naomi Hughes Shercliffe on 20 Nov 1628 at Bradford, St Peter (Bradford Cathedral), Yorkshire, England.
Together they immigrated to Virginia in 1635 (NUGENT, NELL M. Cavaliers and Pioneers: A Calendar of Virginia Land Grants, 1623-1800. Vol. 1:1-6. Richmond, VA: Dietz Printing Co., 1929-1931).
In the book British Roots of American Families her name is given as Naomi Hewes, on immigration lists for 1635 she is listed as Naomy Wilkinson. In an Index of marriages which is derived from "various sources", for her marriage to William Wilkinson, her maiden name is Naomi Shercliffe and her date of birth is 1612.
On November 20, 1635 William received 700 Virginia acres in Linhaven (also called Chisopeian River), opposite Captain Adam Thorrogood's plantation. They had two daughters Rebecca and Mary. During his 15 years in Virginia, Naomi died there and he married widow Margaret Budden who had a daughter Elizabeth. In 1650 he moved to Maryland to become rector of Popular Hill and the first Anglican pastor to be accredited in Maryland. There he applied for 900 acres, his rights for his own personal adventure and for transportation of his 3 daughters (Mary, Rebecca, and Elizabeth), wife Margaret, and 3 servants William Warren, Robert Cornish and Anne Stevens."
