Biographical Summary
John Cook, born 12th Sept. 1807, eldest son of George C, D.D., min. of Laurencekirk (afterwards Professor of Moral Philosophy at St Andrews) ; educated at Laurencekirk Parish School and Univ. of St Andrews ; MA. (1823) ; licen. by Presb. of Fordoun 17th Sept. 1828; assistant to his father ; ord. to Cults 1st June 1832 ; trans, to Second Charge, and adm. 19th Dec. 1833 ; suspended by the General Assembly 10th May 1842, from his judicial functions as a member of Presb. and other superior judicatories, till after the first Wednesday of March 1843, for holding communion with the mins. of Strathbogie ; trans, to First Charge, and adm. 20th June 1843; D.D. (St Andrews 1843) ; convener of the General Assembly's Committee on Education 27th May 1854 ; depute-clerk of Assembly 1859 ; principal clerk 1862 ; Moderator 24th May 1866; died 11th Sept. 1874. He marr. 14th July 1840, Helen (died 3rd Jan. 1860), daugh. of Henry Davidson, sheriff-clerk of Haddingtonshire, and had issue —

- Diana Shank, born 13th March 1843 (marr. John Forbes Watson Grant, M.A., min. of the Second Charge, Haddington, afterwards of St Stephen's, Edinburgh);

- Louisa Frances, born 8th Aug. 1856, died in infancy.
