About Reverend Archibald Archibald Stobo
“The Rev. Archibald Stobo matriculated at Edinburgh (1694). Graduated with a MA on 25 Jun 1697; d 1740, m at Edinburgh 9 Jul 1699 Elizabeth Park d 1747.
“They sailed for Darcea, Isthmus of Panama, in September of the same year. The venture ended in disaster and they began their return to Scotland aboard the “Rising Sun.” They were caught in a gale, and had to put into the port of Charles Town. There, he was invited to go into the city to marry a couple, it is said. With his wife, a Lt. Graham and a few others, he left the ship.
“A hurricane arose soon after, and the ship was blown out to sea, and all aboard were lost. He saved nothing except a small pocket Bible which is now in the possession of the SC Historical Society.
“He was instrumental in founding the first presbytery in the colony and in establishing the Presbyterian Churches in Charleston, the Bethel Presbytery Church, Pon Pon, name Walterboro, and the Cainhoy Church, to all of which he was a faithful servant from 1710 to 1728. “Records of the day show that he became a landed proprietor, was a man of means, and an influential citizen. His house, as shown on an old map of Charleston, was one of the largest in town (and it is assumed that he had inherited property in Scotland)
“Many prominent families have descended from Archibald Stobo and Elizabeth Park. He died in 1740 and is buried in the churchyard in Walterboro. Elizabeth was alive on 18 Apr 1747
