John Lockhart, born 22nd Oct. 1761, second son of William L. of Birkhill and Violet Inglis of Corehouse, parish of Lesmahagow ; educated at Univ. of Edinburgh ; licen. by Presb. of Stirling 19th Jan. 1785 ; ord. to Cambusnethan 29th June 1786 ; pres. by the Magistrates and Council 13th June, trans, and adm. 30th Sept. 1796; D.D. (Edinburgh, 23rd July 1803) ; died 6th Dec. 1842. He marr.

(1) 5th Dec. 1786, Elizabeth (died 14th Dec. 1791), daugh. of Robert Dinwiddie, Germiston, and had issue —

• William of Milton Lockhart, M.P. for Lanarkshire, born 28th Sept. 1787, died s.p. 25th Nov. 1856;
• Robert Dinwiddie, born 20th Sept. 1789, died 14th Jan. 1797;
• John, born 6th March 1791, died 19th April 1792

• Laurence of Milton Lockhart, D.D., min. of Inchinnan, born 29th Dec. 1795;
• Mary Margaret, born 9th Oct. 1797, died 1st Jan. 1803 ;
• Archibald, born 31st July 1799, died 3rd Jan. 1803;
• Violet, born 17th Feb. 1801, died unmarr. 25th Jan. 1849 ;
