About Reverend Henri Gonin, SV/PROG
Only one Swiss missionary, Henri Louis Gonin born Croix VD 9.11.1837, died Stellenbosch 14.12.1910, is known to have worked for this mission. He was initially trained for the Mission Romande (later renamed Swiss Mission). While studying in Scotland, he met William Robertson, a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa, who was sent to Europe in 1860 to seek ministers for his church. Gonin accepted the appointment as pioneer missionary at Saulsburg near Rustenburg, Transvaal. Starting 1864 he worked there for nearly fifty years and then retired to Stellenbosch. He married 23.5.1897 Jenny de Wattwil, daughter of Count von Zinzendorf on whose estate the Herrnhuter Movement (Moravian Brothers) was founded. They had four daughters and four sons, one of who, Henri Theodore, followed in his father’s footsteps, 1905 was inducted as parson at Carnarvon and 1913-1933 lectured at the Missionary Institute at Wellington near Cape Town.
Marc Gonin: I don't think the above excerpt is correct. Jenny was not the daughter of Count von Zinzendorf.
