He was a farmer in Albany until 1843, when he removed from his farm to the village of Albany, where he had begun to preach the preceding year, and fully entered upon his ministerial work. He had the charge of the church until the autumn of 1866. During that time he also had the pastoral charge of the church in Newport for eight years, and of the church in Irasburgh for three years, preaching at those places one-half of the time and at Albany the other half. In July 1876, he removed to Lowell, VT, and had charge of the small Baptist church there.

Mr. Hovey married, first, Fanny Caroline, daughter of John and Deborah (Haines) Kellum May 26, 1836, in Irasburgh, VT, where she was born Oct. 29, 1814. She died in Lowell Feb. 12, 1873, at the age of fifty-eight, and her remains lie in the cemetery at West Albany, Vt. He married, second. Myrtilla Eglantine, daughter of Newton and Submit (Perkins) Hitchcock Dec. 23, 1873, in Bethel, Vt. She was born in Westfield, VT, Sept. 29 1837. Mr. Hovey died in Lowell May —, 1882, at the age of sixty-seven.
