Freemasonry: Proposed as candidate for freemason in the Royal Somerset House and Inverness Lodge in December 1802. Later, he joined the Lodge of Harmony in Hampton. By 1808, he was elected Right Worshipful Master of the Lodge of Harmony. He was able to settle disputes between Scottish and English Grand lodges when he completed the ritual for the Lodge of reconciliation. As reward for his work, he was made Senior Grand Warden in 1816 and Grand Chaplain in 1817.
