About Reverend Samuel Wakeman, I
Birth: Jun. 7, 1635 Worcestershire, England Death: Mar. 8, 1692 Fairfield Fairfield County Connecticut, USA
The son of my ancestors, JOHN & ElIZABETH (HOPKINS) WAKEMAN, he was baptized on Bewdley on June 7, 1635. Sometime during his childhood, he came with his family to New England. He attended Harvard College but left in 1655 in a disagreement with the college.
He married on August 29, 1656 in New Haven, Conn., Hannah Goodyear. They were married by her father, GOV. STEVEN GOODYEAR. She married (2) Nathaniel Burr and died in 1721. They removed to Fairfield after the birth of their first son, Samuel, about 1657. He took the oathe of fidelity Feb. 7, 1657 in New Haven Colony. In 1662, he appeared before the Gen. Court at Hew Haven regarding a debt.
Rev. Samuel Wakeman was a minister in Fairfield from 1665 to his death, having been ordained there on Sept. 30th, 1665. He received a land grant of 200 acres in May, 1673. His will dated March 8, 1692 gave to the church a silver bowl, 3 pounds to the grammar school in Fairfield, 2 pounds to the poor (10 shillings to Thomas Jones).
Rev. Samiuel Wakeman was highly regarded by his parishoners as well as other ministers. He was a founder of "The First Religious Society of Roxbury, MA" along with other ancestors, John Johnson and Robert Cole.
Biographical Sketches of Graduates of Harvard U. by J. L. Sibley, M. S., vol. 1, 1642l-1658, p. 16: ".... There were at least five of them [studied at Harvard but didn't get a degree] who after made a very shining Figure in New England.....the Rev. Mr. Samuel Wakeman of Fairfield."
"Ye OLD BURYING GROUND OF FAIRFIELD, CONN." by Mrs. Kate Perry, p. 228: "Rev. Samuel Wakeman was called by the vote of the town--as was the custom--in 1665, the second edifice was built during his pastorate, and when he died in 1692, it was resolved in town meeting 'his death is for a lamentation unto us'.
