Sydney Turner graduated BA from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1836 (MA 1839). He was ordained and was the curate of Christ Church, Southwark, from 1838 to 1841. The following year he became chaplain to the Philanthropic Society, then in Southwark, and was instrumental in moving the School from Southwark to Redhill in 1849. He ceased to be chaplain to the school when he became Inspector of Prisons and Reformatories in 1857. He held that position for 10 years before becoming Rector of Hempstead, Gloucestershire, where he lived until he died 12 years later. For a year (1875-76) he was also Dean of Ripon.
