The focus of this profile is Thomas HILL, the father of the HILL families that are aligned with the HANKS families and the Dodson Families. Some researchers say he descended from the 1602 John Hill of Attleboro/Dorchester Mass..
Caution, There is no conclusive evidence that this Thomas HILL is connected to the Attleboro/Dorchester Mass Lineage, with direct English ancestry, which is the dominant theory.
Alternative:
Thomas2 Hill, son of Thomas1 Hill of England, thru whom the line descends, was born in England in 1716, and fought in the war between the French and English. He then emigrated to America, settling in New Jersey. In 1753, he was married to Sarah Hamlin, and in 1764, moved to London County, Virginia. Thomas2 Hill had a family of sixteen children, six daughters whose names have not come down to me, and ten sons as follows: Joseph, Reuben, Thomas3 (our direct ancestor) Amos, Jonathan, Allen, Daniel, John, William and Charles. I have not attempted to trace the descendants of those sons and daughters other than those of Thomas3 Hill, as their off-spring at the present time would probably reach a very large number. I assume there have been approximately two thousand descendants of Thomas' Hill. Readers of this genealogy will therefore understand why there are many Hills living at the present time in America who are not connected directly with this genealogy.

The following is from a letter written in May 1891 by Hanks Neville Hill to E. E. McClure: Portland, Oregon May 1891
Thomas and William Hill, my great-grandfather and his brother, came from England and settled in Pennsylvania in the early days of the colonies- Grandfather, Thomas Hill, was born in Pennsylvania, married and lived there until my father, Reubin, was 4 years old. He was the 4th child of a family of 16. When father was 4 years old grandfather moved to Virginia, near Richmond, where my father was married to Joice Hanks. Grandmother Hill was a Hamlin.
Father, Reuben Hill's brother, Joseph, was the oldest, then came William, Allen, John, , who was captain in General Jackson's command and was killed during the "Cherokee War" about 1812. Allen was a Baptist minister. Other brothers of my father were Thomas, Daniel, and Delaware, of whom I know little except that Daniel lived on the French Broad, an affluent of the Tennessee. John was from Williamson Co., Tennessee; , Allen was in Jackson County, Tennessee, ; one went to Texas, after annexation, and one to Illinois.
Family
There are several published works which provide the list of children for Thomas Hill, and have missing, confusing, and conflicting and/or incorrect information
From According to Gladys Hanks Johnson, GENEALOGY OF THE HANKS AND ALLIED FAMILIES (1965), HILL SUPPLEMENT available Ancestry.com. [database on-line]. Provo, UT: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2004. Three of the children of Moses and Aggatha (Dodson) Hanks married Hills. We do not have the proof of relationship, but we think they were brothers and sisters and children of the Rev. Thomas Hill. The marriage bond of George Hanks and Lurane Hill distinctly says she is a daughter of Thomas Hill, Mrs. Waldrop of Murray, Ky., is positive that Reubin Hill, husband of Joicey Hanks and her ancestor, is a son of the Rev. Thomas Hill. The Rev. Thomas Hanks married Sari "Sally" Hill, which gives two brothers Hanks and one sister Hanks marrying one brother Hill and two sisters Hills or at least we think so. A considerable amount of work remains to be done on this family. Perhaps with the lists below and the leads given someone can follow up on them.
Children listed in this "Hill Supplement" include Thomas Hill b. 19 November 1724 m. Hamlin or Hamblen. They moved from Pennsylvania or New Jersey to Virginia in 1765. There were sixteen children, we have most of them listed below: [listed in a different order from book]
- Joseph Hill.
- William Hill.
- Allen Hill.
- Reubin Hill b. 1761 in Pennsylvania m. Joicey Hanks.
- Capt. John Hill.
- Daniel Hill.
- Thomas Hill.
- Lurane Hill m. George Hanks (This is approximately where she fits in. BRR).
- Delaware Hill.
- Samuel Hill.
- Abraham Hill.
- James Hill.
- Sarah Hill m. Rev. Thomas Hanks.
There were three more children according to a letter from Hanks Neville Hill, a grandson of Rev. Thomas Hill and son of Reubin and Joicey (Hanks) Hill. However he did not name them. We presume they were daughters. This family is an enormous one and, since the name is quite common, rather difficult to trace.
Other books also add
- Walter Hill:
- Jeremiah Hill.
- Thomas Hill, son of Rev Thomas Hill, [became pastor in Somerset, Pulaski, KY in 1811- which is on the Cumberland River "Bottoms" is mentioned above in Reuben's bio]
Note, in a bio for Thomas Hill,b1797/son of this Thomas Hill/Mary Stone it says Thomas Hill, Jr., was born in East Tennessee, September 12, 1797. While in infancy his parents removed to Kentucky--purchasing a farm in Pulaski County, KY . His father, Thomas Hill/Mary Stone was the first pastor of White Oak Baptist Church.

Data accessed July 7, 2022 [caution, earliest known ancestor is entered by the user, and is not necessarily accurate] However, All share a common paternal ancestor Group 14 - Daniel Hill and Eleanor Nodding (proven son of Samuel HILL) This does not prove that Samuel Hill and his son's Abraham and Daniel have the same DNA of Thomas Hill connected to the "John Hill, 1602-1676" ancestor. The entry of the "earliest known ancestor" for each participant needs to be proven. As you can see, at least 2 participants claim lineage to the "John Hill, 1602-1676" ancestor. Analysis of participants claiming ancestor of John Hill 1602 needs to be done to see if Daniel Hill / Samuel Hill share the same paternal lineage with Thomas Hill/Mary Hamlin
Thomas Hill fought in war between the French and English and emigrated to America, settling in New Jersey. In 1764 he moved to London County, Virginia. Had sixteen children, six daughters and ten sons. Susannah Hill who married John Chaney is presumed to be one of the six daughters because of the birthplace of their daughter Susannah Chaney (Pulaski Co. KY in 1807) who married William T. Burton and the fact that after William T. Burton died, Susannah Chaney/Burton moved to Paris Crossing, Jennings Co. Indiana and joined the Coffee Creek Baptist Church in 1835.
