JOAN CULME was the eldest daughter of THOMAS CULME and his wife JOAN (nee WATTS). She was baptised at Plympton on 5 January 1714/15.
On 24 September 1740 at St Andrew's in Plymouth JOAN married Reverend WILLIAM GODDARD, vicar of Plympton St Mary. Licence granted 23 September 1740.
WILLIAM was the son of PHILIP GODDARD and was born in 1700, & died on 25 March 1782.
JOAN and WILLIAM had issue: 1. GRACE GODDARD who was born about 1743(???) married her second cousin JOHN CULME of Tothill on 10 June 1760 at Plympton St Mary. She died on 20 January 1809, aged 65.
JOAN was buried at Plympton on 12 July 1741 (???)
In about 1748 GRACE was painted by JOSHUA REYNOLDS, who was the son of Reverend SAMUEL REYNOLDS, who was the headmaster of the Plympton St Mary school. This painting passed down the family line to Admiral Sir MICHAEL CULME-SEYMOUR, who displayed it in his art collection at Rockingham Castle, which he passed to a nephew, MICHAEL SAUNDERS WATSON, who passed it to his son JAMES SAUNDERS WATSON, the present owner.
Rev WILLIAM GODDARD was baptised at Beenham, Herts, on 22 November 1700, described as the son of PHILIP GODDARD. He was listed in Oxoniensus as being the son of PHILIP GODDARD, clerk, of Bina (Beenham) Herts. He attended Exeter College, Oxford, matriculating on 16 March 1719/20, aged 19. BA 1723. He died on 25 March 1782. His Will dated 18 December 1776 was proved at PCC London by the Executors named, on 26 April 1782. He left £30 to a servant, JOHN HAKE, an annuity of £5 guineas a year to THOMAZIN, the wife of JAMES TRENAMON, carpenter for her lifetime, and the residue of his estate to his daughter GRACE, wife of JOHN CULME. The Executors were RICHARD DOIDGE Esq of Elfordleigh, Devon and JAMES FURNEAUX Esq of Swilly, Devon, and the witnesses were EDWARD DIKE and WILLIAM ELFORD.
