Charles Maxwell was the son of Robert Taylor Maxwell and Elizabeth Maxwell (nee Chalmers) and the stepson of Sarah Way Maxwell (nee Warner) of Beautiful Valley, Geraldine, New Zealand. His mother had died at Ashburton on 10 December 1882. During World War I, Charles served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 3rd Battalion. He was killed in action at the Somme and is remembered on the Grévillers New Zealand Memorial.
