About Rfn. Francis Allan McLean
RIFLEMAN F. A. McLEAN. Rifleman Francis Allan McLean, who was killed in action on 15th September, was a son on the late Henry McLean, who will be remembered as one of our old identities, and for many years town clerk of Gladstone. Rifleman McLean was born in Invercargill and educated at the Waihopaii school and Technical College. Before enlisting he was a fitter in the Railway Workshops. He was a member of the St. Andrew's Society and the Railway Rowing Club, and also of the Railway Football Club, and will be remembered by many of his old friends and former school fellows. He has two brothers still at the front, and another fell in .the South African War. One of his brothers, Trooper Alfred McLean, left with the Main Body, and went through Gallipolii campaign, where he was wounded, and after the evacuation transferred to the artillery, and is now serving in France, while yet another brother is with the Ist Liverpool's Own CQ.M. Sergt. T. 11. McLean), and is also in France. So it will be seen that the McLean family are doing their part, in the Empire's cause. Source: Southern Cross (7 October 1916, p. 7).
