Alfred McLean was born at Invercargill on 6 April 1874, the son of Henry McLean and Margaret McLean (nee Kennedy). Husband of Mary McLean (nee Morrison), Invercargill. Driver in NZFA, file number 9/513. 11 October 1917 Gunshot wound to the head, Ypres resulting in headaches and dizziness. Transferred to Hornchurch. Contracted syphilis and treated before arrival back in New Zealand. Secondary rash by 24 June 1918. 'Intimate relation' treated three months later.
An inquest was held on Alfred McLean, the returned soldier who was found poisoned in the Southland Hospital on April 3. The evidence showed that the poison was got from the pocket of an old tunic in the bathroom. A verdict was returned of suicide while in a depressed state of mind, no blame being attachable to the staff. Source: Grey River Argus (14 April 1919, p. 2)
