About Rfn. John Gordon
John Gordon was born at Cabrach in Moray, Scotland, on 22 September 1889. He was the son of William Gordon and Anne Gordon (née Sheed) who had married in Scotland on 14 July 1882. John emigrated to New Zealand, where he worked for New Zealand Railways as a surfaceman, a person who maintains railway tracks and the rail bed. He joined up during World War I, serving with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 4th Battalion. John was wounded in action in France, and died of those wounds in the No. 1 Canadian General Hospital at Étaples on 13 November 1916. He was buried in the Étaples Military Cemetery [XII. D. 6.] on 15 November 1916. John is remembered on the Railways Roll of Honour board at Wellington Railway Station at Pipitea in Wellington, New Zealand, and on his parents grave in Downan Graveyard at Glenlivet in Moray, Scotland (bio by Debbie McCauley, 2 February 2024).
