About Rfn. William Elwood Behm
William Elwood Behm was born at Whangārei in the Northland area of New Zealand's North Island on 25 November 1892. His parents were Jacob Elwood Behm and Teresa Sara Mary Josephine Behm (nee Preston) who married in New Zealand in 1889. William worked as a miner before joining the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 1st Battalion during World War I. He was killed in action in France on 1 May 1918 and buried in the Euston Road Cemetery, [I. J. 29.]. His brother, Benjamin Walter Joseph Behm, served with the Australian Imperial Force, 3rd Australian Infantry Battalion, and had been killed in action at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915.
