Richard Baker, said to have been born in County Kent (or Suffolk or ?), England, about 1614. He died at Dorchester 25 Oct. 1689.

Biography

came from England on the ship BACHELOR to Boston and arrived November 28, 1635. According to Colket (q.v.), Richard Baker arrived in Dorchester, Massachusetts about 1639 (first mention in America) and died in Dorchester on 25 October 1689. He was a Proprietor, Master's mate, and a Freeman. Source: "Register" 43:279 (desc.) 1 2

On 4 Nov 1639 he became a member of the Church at Dorchester.[4] His father-in-law, Henry Withington was the Ruling Elder of the Church. He married Faith Withington shortly after his entry. After finishing his contract in 1639 he settled on Savin Hill.

He was admitted freeman 18 May 1642,[4] was a selectman in 1653, a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1658, and in 1668 was elected ruling elder of the church in Dorchester but declined to serve. He was an ancestor of Walter Baker, the chocolate manufacturer of Dorchester, whose grandfather, James Baker, bought the original chocolate mill of Henry Stone (6, ii, 4). [5]

He was a member of the Honorable Artillery Company in 1658 and served the public in some capacity from 1642 - 1685.[6]
