About Richard Bowen

c1847: Left home at Ludlow (Shropshire, England) for Aus. with brother Francis Jr., travelled extensively until settling at Hesket Vic. because it was similar to Wales where some of the family were born.

c1850: Brothers bought adjoining properties, Richard's named Oakdale Farm.

Built part of his house from stone quarried at Willowvale Farm, 2 rooms still in use >100yrs.

Planted acorn brought from England beside house, grew to be one of Victoria's biggest oaks.

1853: Moved to 34 Jeffcott St. West Melbourne after marriage (had no children).

A carpenter and good businessman, gave generously to local hospitals.

1870's: Secretary of West Melb. Literary Institute.

c1878: City councillor, Bourke Ward; 1898 Alderman; 1901 resigned (ill health)

Responsible for the brighter lighting of Flagstaff Gardens.

Took care of mother for some years, until she was 103 yrs.
