PONTIAC - Richard C. "Lum" Bowen, 83, Pontiac, died at 10:04 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 29, 2006) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.
His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Martin-Burke Funeral Home, Pontiac, with the Rev. William H. Beswick of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Inurnment will be in South Side Cemetery, Pontiac, where full military rites will be accorded. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be made to the Livingston County Humane Society.
Richard was born May 1, 1923, at Pontiac, a son of Shelby and Evelyn VanGilder Bowen. He is survived by one brother, James Bowen, Pontiac; 16 nieces and nephews; and several great- and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Richard was educated in Pontiac schools and was a self-employed truck driver. He also was employed by Lee Trucking, Pontiac. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was stationed at the Armed Guard Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a lifetime member-;of the Pontiac VFW Post 883 and a member of the Pontiac Masonic Lodge. Richard was an avid NASCAR fan and raced stock cars.
