New Zealand Herald, 29 May 1900
The adjourned inquest on the body of Richard Broomfield, who was drowned at Waitoa, on the 11th inst., through the capsizing of the cutter Nancy, was held at Gleeson's Hotel yesterday, before Dr. McArthur (coroner), Sergeant Gordon representing the police. Alfred Bryant, the owner of the vessel, gave evidence as to the vessel being perfectly seaworthy, and said she sunk in 48ft of water, near the shore. The mate, Robert Gower, said the deceased and himself, who were the entire crew of the cutter, left Chamberlain's Island for Auckland on the 11th inst., and when the Sandspit passage was reached the wind dropped and a strong head tide running they dropped anchor off the point. Deceased and witness were below at nine p.m. when a noise was heard and it was found that the staysail had broken loose, and the taffrail was under water. Witness could do nothing to right the vessel, and called deceased, the vessel heeling over he slid down the side and managed to get into the dingy, but could not see anything of deceased. The boom then swung round and stove the dingy in, and witness swam ashore. A verdict of " Accidentally drowned" was returned.

In Memoriam
BROOMFIELD.—In fond and loving memory of my dear sons. Richard, drowned off the Nancy at Taupo. May 11. 1918: John, died November 17, 1918; Charles, and also his second son Henry, who died at Whangarei, November 24, 1918, of influenza. Forget! No, never. Some may forget The love that once they gave; But mother's love still follows her sons, Far, far beyond the grave. A chain of six sons was tightly linked together. But oh. that chain is broken now; Three links have gone for ever. For the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be His Name. Sons of the late William Broomfield.
Inserted by their sorrowing mother, Mrs. E. Broomfield, Whitford.

Note: The drowning is recorded as occurring at Taupo in the memorial notice, but news reports state the capsizing of the Nancy was off the Sandspit, between Auckland and Thames.
