About Richard Caleb Leeming, Free Settler "Margaret" 1841

Richard Leeming did not have the middle name "Caleb" in any immigration, BDM, baptism or newspaper information. That was his son, Richard Caleb Leeming.

The photo on this profile is not Richard Leeming who died aged 41; it is of someone much older, therefore unknown.

He could be wearing an Orange Lodge collar, which could make this a pic of Richard (Junior), however, it is not the same person as the pic on Richard Caleb Leeming (Junior)'s profile, who died aged 59. Therefore this is a pic of an unknown person.
(It could be John McArthur, husband of Alice Leeming, in the Orange Lodge, died 1904 aged 75).

Richard Leeming, shoe-maker, married Eliza McConnell in 1846.

Richard Leeming died 1851, aged 41, a boot and shoe maker (see below).

which has an incorrect death date/age for Richard Leeming.

Other research has Richard Leeming arriving on the "Margaret", 28 March 1841, with wife Margaret, both aged about 30, both farm servants, Wesleyan, with 3 daughters Jane, Emma and Alice, perhaps aged from 5 to 10 (indexes/records NSW Gov, Margaret Page 4). See bottom of this page for probable info on Jane and Alice. Richard was from Yorkshire, Margaret was from Lancashire, as were the daughters.

BDM NSW (needs certificates to verify)

There is a death for a Margaret Leeming 1844/142 108, age 29, who could be Richard's wife.

An infant, Mary Leeming, also died 1844/1 109, possibly their daughter.

Richard Leeming (no Caleb) then married Eliza McConnell:

Marriage V1846/66 84; Leeming, Richard, to McConnell, Eliza; District IB, which is the Wesleyan Methodist, Field of Mars, Parramatta.

The Sentinel (Sydney) Thu 12 Feb 1846 MARRIED.

Death of Richard Leeming:

SMH Sat 30 Aug 1851 (Part article) CORONER'S INQUESTS.

- An inquest was held by the Coroner on Thursday evening, at the house of Mr. Merriman, Miller's Point, on view of the body of Richard Leeming, then lying dead at Flood's Wharf...

Deceased was 41 years of age, and leaves a wife and family (the former being on the eve of her confinement). He was apparently in good health up to the moment of his being so suddenly seized and was a man of very temperate habits. Verdict, died by the visitation of God...

Empire (Sydney) Thurs 28 Aug 1851: ... Richard Leming (sic)... The deceased, who was a class leader in the Wesleyan communion...

...

Note: 1851 Eliza was pregnant, and son Richard Caleb Leeming was born 1852. As the below Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction has Eliza still living at Flood's Wharf Sydney until at least June 1852, it can be assumed that Richard Caleb Leeming was born in Sydney, in April 1852. He was baptised in Sydney, in July 1852, "abode Sydney".

If the Richard and Margaret Leeming who arrived on the "Margaret" in 1841 with children is the same Richard Leeming above, then these would be their daughters, who moved to live at the Shoalhaven, where their half brother Richard moved to.

1. Eldest daughter Jane moved to the Shoalhaven after her marriage:

Marriage 1849/222 84; Leaming (sic), Jane, to Hodgkinson, Henry.

Death 1883/11520 Shoalhaven; Hodgkinson, Jane, daughter of Richard and Margaret

Death 1899/10420 Paddington; Hodgkinson, Henry, age 86 years.

...

Henry Hodgkinson moved to Paddington after his wife Jane died. He must have been in touch with his wife's half sister Martha:

Martha Alcorn Allerton is the daughter of Richard and Eliza Leeming, half sister of Jane Hodgkinson.

The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) Thu 5 Oct 1899

2. Emma.

It is believed, in other research, that Emma married Robert Lindsay. No BDM Marriage found.

Daughters born to Robert and Emma Lindsay have the names "Alice Bleasdale" and "Margaret Leeming" which strongly supports that Emma was "Leeming".

BDM NSW

Death (1911) registered 1912/4032 Woollahra; Lindsay, Emma, daughter of Richard.

3. Alice was living in Terrara, Shoalhaven, and could explain why Richard Caleb Leeming (Junior) moved there. Richard joined the Orange Lodge with John McArthur;

Marriage 1856/594 Sydney; Leeming, Alice, to McArthur, John.

SMH Wed 8 Oct 1856

By special license, by the Rev. William Schofield, at the Wesleyan Chapel, Bourke-street, on the 6th instant, Mr. John McArthur, of Shoalhaven, to Alice, third daughter of the late Richard Leeming, Esq., of Sydney.

The people of Nowra have decided to show their appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the district by Mr. John McArthur, J.P., who has recently been overtaken by financial misfortune, by purchasing the Terrara homestead for Mrs. McArthur and family. Between £300 and £400 will be required, and no difficulty appears to be anticipated in obtaining the amount.
