About Richard Cave

Richard was the son of John Cave (1732-1809) and Mildred Bell (1742-1779). At the close of their lives the parents lived in Scott County, Kentucky.

He married Sarah Wood on 7 January 1792 in Woodford County, Kentucky. They had at least seven children. Sarah died in 1813. Richard took as his second wife Ann Brent of Georgetown, Kentucky. Her fond name was Nancy. They emigrated to Boone county in 1816.

In Kentucky and Missouri, Richard Cave was widely known as a preacher of the Gospel. On June 6, 1824 he organized Bear Creek Christian Church which later became Antioch Christian Church. The first meetings of this church were held in the Cave home. Later he served other Boone churches for a time, among them the Christian Church in Columbia, and Red Top Christian west of Hallsville.

Cave was civic minded. On May 24, 1821 he was appointed a commissioner of school land, assuming the important responsibility of locating schools on each quarter section of land. He served on Boone county's first grand jury on 2 April 1821. William Switzler tells us Cave was "commissioned as a justice of the peace, standing up in all the glory of his robes, magisterial, the pioneer justice of Columbia township."

He brought from Kentucky a horse mill for the grinding of grain and installed it on his farm which made his home an important gathering place for the neighborhood. There was often a long wait to grind one's grain, and the customers expected a modicum of service - sometimes meals, and sometimes overnight lodging. The farm, with the mill still operating was eventually sold to David Guitar.
