The circa birth date of 1294 is the same year that his father, Simon, died whilst impriioned in York Castle.

At this time, Simon was married to two women, Alice and Katherine (See all three profiles, which gives details of the case held in the Royal Court in 1297 re. this matter). Given that Katherine may have been aged about 55 at this time, then her parentage of Richard is not likely.
