About Richard Estep
You may recall the story of the first Estep's in America, of two brothers who came across from Great Britain in the late 1600's. Well, Richard was elder brother to Joseph (born in Stepney Parish, County Middelsex, England in 1669), and the two were the only children of John and Elizabeth, also both of Middelsex. I first heard this story from Dad probably sometime in the 1970s, and given the unlikely possibility of his doing any actual research on the matter on his own, I'm thinking this was more of a family story that was handed down through the generations. Interestingly, it appears to be accurate. Now the bit about the brothers being mule skinners (i.e., one who drives mules [although also a term to define any man who performs manual labor for a living]) is less clear. But understanding the Estep's proclivity for horses (at least a bit later in our history), perhaps this too is not too far off mark.
