The location and date of Richard Foster's birth are unknown. The first record of his presence at Plymouth is on a list of soldiers "sent forth [on August 16, 1645] in the late Expedition against the Narrohiggansets & their Confederats."[1]

On September 10, 1651, Richard married Mary Bartlett.[2] On August 2, 1652, for... "the summe of 15 pound; 10 pound wherof is alreddy paied and the Remayning five pound to bee paied by the 2nd of august 1653 by cattle or beefe by Richard Foster...," Governor Bradford recorded their purchase of a house and land. It was bounded on one side by Mary's father Robert Bartlett and on the other side by Joseph Warren.[3] Their children are:

Mary b 8 Mar 1652/3; died before 1659[4] Benjamin b 1654-5[5] Richard died in late 1658 or early 1659; he was alive but absent from his home in February of 1657/8[6] and by the summer of 1659 he was dead.

In late Jun or early July 1659, Mary's father Robert Bartlett took a ten year lease on his deceased son-in-law's land and agreed to pay his grandson Benjamin Foster, then aged "four yeares or therabouts" the sum of 8£ when he came of age. The same day, an agreement was reached regarding Benjamin's care should his mother Mary, soon-to-be wife of Jonathan Morey, predecease Jonathan.[7]
