In 1635 Will of James Clough - John Guile sold the messuage he and Samuel inherited, to James Clough of Ilketshall St. Margaret: !LDS computer christening records show many people of Gile, Guile, Guyle, Gyle names in 1500 and 1600 in East Anglia - Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.: !Microfilm, Burke's Directory for Suffolk shows many of the name Gile and Guile in 1550 to 1650, including 2 Guild - John & Martha in Huntingfield and Nic & Mgt. in Nuyland(?).: !"Wills of the Archdeaconry of Suffolk" 3 vols, 1620 on, show reference toseveral of various spellings including Guilde, copies in file, including the will of Edward Guile of Barking (1637) with first (eldest?) son named is Samuel and youngest son William, with William the Executor (Samuel gone?). Richard Guilde on 27 Jan 1620/1 at Beccls, witnessed by mark the will of Robert Poope of Ilketshall St. Margaret, dated 29 Dec. 1620.: !Received from Florence Guile Brown 4301 San Pedro N.E. D5, Albuquerque, NM information on the ship "Hector" - "I am enclosing some information regarding the ship "Hector" which you may not have and which mayprove helpful. We fully intended to return to England one fine day but have not done so. When we were there in Somerset House we could find no records of the "Hector". The Mormon Library had little information also. So we do not know from whence they came - or the port from which they sailed. Do you?" (By phone, she said they were on a "Theater Tour" in 1980 and between shows dropped in to to enquire about Samuel, John and Ann. They returned later and were given the Hector information sheet.) Much research on the Hector, conclusion it was a new ship, making its first voyage in 1636, arrived May (Winthrop Journal 1, p. 181; also 1, pp 187,188.) No passenger lists found, but above show Captain William Moore and Mate Thomas Milward. It sailed for the 2nd time in 1637 - details and passenger list in Carl Boyer's "Ship Passenger Lists" vol. 2.; then was commandeered by the King for Navy and finally sunk in 1656.: !"Migration from East Anglia to New England Before 1660" a PhD thesis by N C PTyack, University of London 1951 - ordered in fisches and studied, no listings of Hector of our ancestors. Detailed discussion offormation of migration groups, sailings, etc.: !NEHGS "Register" July 1992 - "Social Cohesion in Early New England"based onTyack's work and many others, shows more completely the forming of groups and how they settled, excellent bibliogaphy for research.: !NEHGS - "Great Migration Study" with substantial research on New England, town by town, subscribed to newsletter. Jan - Mar 1993 has excellent article on Dedham, ordered in list of 125 signers of the original covenant.(8/93): !Retained researcher 8/93 Dr. Joanna Martin, Oak Tree Farm, Finborough Road,Hitcham, Ipswich, Suffolk 1P7 7LS - phone Bildeston 741266, who was referred to me by Dr. Richard Wilson of the Centre of East Anglian Studies in Norwich, England, in response to my enquiry as to how toproceed with search. In the report with her letter of 31 Aug. 1993, she identifies a will of Margery Gilde of Ilketshall St. Andrew, widow, dated 24 Jan 1628/9, proved 18Mar. 1629/30: "Testator directs: Tomy son John Gilde - my apparel, both linen and Woollen, except some articles which I have disposed to others. My friend William Goldinge and Elizabeth his wife know what they are. Residue of my estate to bedivided between my two sons John and Samuell, who are to be my executors. Testratrix signed X. Witnesses: William Goldinge, Peter Fasset. Bequests of clothes to Christian Warne; Susan, wife of Henry Welton; and Elizabeth, wife of William Goldinge. Will proved at Beccles by John Gilde, with power reserved for Samuel Gilde, the other executor."Then she comments: "The ..will is interesting, as it names brothers called John and Samuel Gilde. John Gilde, son of Margery, could be the John 'Guyle' who sold land at Ilketshall St. Margaret to James Clough by 1635, as in the details that you sent me. (from Suffolk Archdeaconry Court Wills 1629-1636 page 406) #918 James Clough of Ilketshall St. Margarety, Yeoman, 19 June 1635) I checked Boyd's Index for a marriage of a Gilde to a Margery ___, and found only the following: 1607 Richard Gild and Margery Jordan married at Wilby The transcript of the Wilby registers shows that Richard Gylde of Weybread and Margery Jorden married there in 1607 (I have not checked the full date in the original register). The transcript shows no baptisms of children of this couple at Wilby to 1620. The surviving registers of Weybread (which is about 10 miles from the Ilketshalls) do not start until 1687. The registers of Ilketshall St. Andrew start in 1581, but the firstregister is in poor condition, and many entries for the period 1600 to 1640 are totally illegible. So whilst John and Samuel Gilde of Ilketshall St. Andrew may well have emigrated, I cannot see much prospectof finding any proof either way.": !Letter of 5 Nov. 1993 - "I have checked one grant of administrationfor a member of the Jordan family, but it does not mention any Guile/Guildconnection. I've also had a look at the Westhall registers, but the Guiles do not seem to have lived there after about 1604. I want to check for manorial (property) records from the Ilketshalls in case they give any clues. I'd also like to have a look at Redisham - and at other parishes in the same area, if there is enough time." SuffolkArchdeaconry Court grants of administration - ref. IC/AA6/2/23 30 Nov. 1616 "Administration of the estate of Margaret Jordon of Wilby was granted to Henry Jordon of St. Andrew's, Ilketshall, and James Jordon of Stradbroke, hersons.": !Letter of 6 Dec 1993 - "I checked for manorial (property) records from Ilketshall St. Andrew and St. Margaret. The records from St. Andrew's start in 1658, and the Record Office has nothing from St. Margaret's. This is unfortunate, as it does look as if the John Guyle who sold property there to James Clough before 1635 (as mentioned in your letter of 5 August) was the son of Richard Gylde and Margery Jordan. Asyou can see from the enclosed report, I found the baptisms of both John and Samuel, sons of Richard Gilde, at St.Margaret's, in 1609 and 1613 respectively. These two brothers certainly do look as if they could have been your emigrants, but I cannot see how we are going to prove this, one way or the other. The surviving documentation simply doesn't give us the information that we need. We can say that they seem to disappear from Suffolk records at roughly the right time (though further work on parish registers might produce further traces of them) but we can't prove that they went to New England." (The attachment gave the baptisms from the original registers of Redisham,Ilketshall St. Lawrence, Sotterley, Huntingfield, Ilketshall St. Margaret and the marriage of Richard Gylde of Weybread and Margery Jorden 10 Nov. 1607, from the original register, Wilby, Suffolk.)
