Seargent Richard Holmes arrived in South Africa in 1830 with The 75th Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders. He was discharged at his request on November 30 1840 after 12 years with the Regiment, His character according to his Commander was " Very good". Sad ending to an apparently good man.

NOTE :
I am Richard Holmes' gg granddaughter, after a lot of research this is what I have found;
The two youngest children listed as Richard A. Holmes" biological children, were not his.
It is now documented that they were actually his wife Elizabeth's' children by another man.
I believe the information has been well sourced. You might want to confirm it. The father appears to be the same individual who fathered her daughter Jane's children. It is confusing: Jane first registered her sons as being the children of her father Richard, he had already passed away.
I think you will find all this information in a book titled " Cotswold to the Cape" by Theo Wiggill.
