BIOGRAPHY: "Richard, son of Richard de Chaundeler of Wilts, is firstmentioned in an enquiry in 9 Edward I (1280-1), regarding the lands ofone Richard le Blunt, whos tenant by military serice the said RichardChandler the younger was. The lands of le Blunt are described as inStotfold, which is inteded for Stoudfold or Stodfold, and adjacent toWilcot. There can, indeed be very little doubt that the lands whichChandler held under le Blount included Oare. Shortly after this, however,we find this branch of the family acquiring property in adjacent places.viz.: in Etchilhampton Parish, two or three miles from Oare, in DevizesParish, about four or five miles distant, and in the Hundred ofHeytebury, about fifteen miles away. In the few rolls in which theirnames are mentioned the descendants of Richard are thus described assometimes of one place, at other times as of another. This has resulted,in the absence of Chacery Inquisitions and information from the De BancoRolls, and certain other records, in osme cvonfusion as regards the exactrelationship of those who succeed each other--whether, for instance, sonor nephew. On the other hand, the descendants did not begin to multiplyvery rapidly until the sixteenth century, and those who do appear in therecords of their day are surely of the landholding line, i.e., the directancestors of the Oare branch.
