About Richard Henry Lee
Birth: Jul. 23, 1794 Death: Jan. 3, 1865
Richard Henry Lee was born 23 Jul 1794 and died 3 Jan 1865 in Washington, PA. He was educated at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA in Law and studied under Judge Thomas Duncan. Richard edited memoirs of his grandfather Richard Henry Lee and his great uncle Dr Arthur Lee. The grandfather was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the first US Senator from Virginia.
Richard practiced law and taught at Washington College in Washington,PA. He was appointed Chair of Languages in 1833 and Chair Belles Lettres in 1837. In 1854 he resigned from his Law practice and began to study Theology. In 1858 he was ordained in the Episcopal Church and was assigned to the Trinity Church in Washington, PA.
His first wife was Mary Duncan Mahon with whom he had three surviving children Mary Ann b. 1819, Flora b. 1821 and Francis Hayne b. 1823. Mary Ann Lee married Isaac Winston in 1854. Mary died in 1856 and widower Isaac then married his sister in law Frances Hayne Lee.
Richard's second wife was Anna Eden Jordan of St. Mary's, MD. They had four surviving children Richard Henry Lee, Philip Ludwell, John Lewellyn and Francis Lightfoot Lee.
