About Richard Long, Sr.

Richard Long, house carpenter of Salisbury, was first recorded in Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts in 1671. He was recognized as a kinsman by Robert Long of Newbury and may have been born in New England but his parents are unknown.

He married Ann French, daughter of Joseph and Susanna Stacy, on 21 July 1680 in Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. She was born 10 January 1658/59 in Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. She was admitted to Salisbury Church 18 December 1687. Richard Long signed petition of 1680; both he and wife signed Bradbury petition of 1692. The following year he bought the Sheldon farm in Scarborough (Black Point) from the widow Rebecca Sheldon; the farm was sold by his heirs in 1720. He was killed by Indians in Amesbury on his way to Haverhill, 4 September 1694 with Deputy Sheriff Joseph Pike (1638 - 1694).

James Brown of Salisbury was appointed guardian for three minor children. Richard Long's widow Ann French Long married (2) Thomas Mudgett of Salisbury in 1695/6. Ann married (3) Alexander Magoon of Kingston New Hampshire and was again widowed in 1731 at Exeter, New Hampshire.
