About Richard Melton
Notes from Coming to America The Melton/Milton's Compiled by Michael Leisure Richard Melton may have been Absolom's father...they were neighbors at Goose Creek, and the tax records show Richard as not tithable in 1787 (old age being the most common reason for being untithable). Richard's first record in Bedford Co was in Aug1779 when he sold a small parcel. On 27Sep1779 he made a gift of deed for 211A at Goose Creek to his son William Melton, another gift of deed for 40A at Goose Creek to his son John Melton, and the same day Absolom Melton purchased 404A at Goose Creek. In 1783 Richard purchased 100A at Goose Creek, and in 1784 he purchased another 200A at Goose Creek. The same adjacent neighbors were mentioned in Richard's and Absolom's deeds. On 22 Feb1796 Richard Melton and his wife Mary sold 44A at Cotton Patch Branch. In the 1787 Bedford Co tax list, Richard had 3 horses and 9 cattle, wasn't tithable, and was visited on the same day as Absolom.
