About Richard Riney

Grandfather Richard was a second generation American. His grandfather emigrated from Ireland probably in the late 1700’s, possibly with three brothers. Four Riney heads of household are found in the 1790 Federal Census, the first census taken by the U.S. Government. The Rineys lived in Sneem, Co.Tipperary, Ireland. They were always very strong Catholics and kept the faith throughout all the Protestant persecutions under which they had to survive after the encroachment of the English against the Irish people began.

The Riney name was probably originally O’Neill, but according to legend, during the Great Persecution, they fled the area which they originally inhabited and migrated to Co. Tipperary, changing the name to Riney, with Ri being Gaelic for king and the Ney standing for the original O’Neill name.

Richard was the son of John B. Riney & Mary Ogden. He married Rose A. Simpson on 19 July 1830 & they had 8 children.
