  • Among the descendants of Thomas de Sandford of Sandford, mentioned above, are many who gained special distinction. The second of that name to become noted is the firth of the line. Sir Ralph de Sandford of Sandford, one of the Barons who wrested the great Magna Charta from King John, 1215. His estates were afterward confiscated, but later restored when his party finally gained the ascendancy under Henry III. His son and successor was Sir Richard de Sandford, styled "Lord of Sandford and and Rothall." He died in 1215, and was succeeded by his son, Sir Robert de Sandford of Sandford, who held his estate by sergeantry (his duties were to attend the King in person), and was succeeded by his elder son, Sir Ralph de Sandford of Sandford, who wedded Alice, daughter of Wolfric Quixhull, by which marriage he added the estate of Wrixhall to his patrimonial possessions. He married, second, Julian, daughter of Robert Corbett, by whom he had a son, his successor at his death in 1452, Sir Richard Sandford of Sandford, born about 1448. In a lengthy note by burke describing the deeds of his elder brother, Thomas Sandford, who commanded the regiment of Fire Locks, there is a letter taken from the dead body of Colonel Thomas Sandford after the attack on Nantwich, January 22, 1644, as follows:
  • .... etc. ____________
  • Caughley
  • .... etc.
  • The Sandfords owned property in Caughley from the 13th to the 16th century. About 1221 Ralph of Sandford unjustly disseised Walter the smith and his wife Agnes of their free tenement in Caughley, and Wenlock priory's tenant Ralph of Caughley also owed Ralph of Sandford's son Richard (d. 1249) 8s. rent for land in Caughley. (fn. 69) Richard Sandford of Sandford had land at Caughley in 1497 (fn. 70) and his son Hugh (d. 1530) held it of the prior of Wenlock. The estate then included the houses and land called INETT. It passed to Hugh Sandford's son Richard (d. c. 1532) and then to Richard's son George who, in 1552, sold it to Richard Moreton (fl. 1578) of Haughton (in Shifnal). (fn. 71)
