  • Among the descendants of Thomas de Sandford of Sandford, mentioned above, are many who gained special distinction. The second of that name to become noted is the firth of the line. Sir Ralph de Sandford of Sandford, one of the Barons who wrested the great Magna Charta from King John, 1215. His estates were afterward confiscated, but later restored when his party finally gained the ascendancy under Henry III. His son and successor was Sir Richard de Sandford, styled "Lord of Sandford and and Rothall." He died in 1215, and was succeeded by his son, Sir Robert de Sandford of Sandford, who held his estate by sergeantry (his duties were to attend the King in person), and was succeeded by his elder son, Sir Ralph de Sandford of Sandford, who wedded Alice, daughter of Wolfric Quixhull, by which marriage he added the estate of Wrixhall to his patrimonial possessions. • Sandford of Sandford. His brother Griffin was the father of William de Sanford, who was living in 1740. Nicholas, another brother, was the founder of the family of Sandford of the Isle of Up, Rossall, near Shrewsbury. Sir Richard de Sandford of Sandford, who married Maud Banaster, died in 1416, and was survived by his son, John Sandford of Sandford, who wedded, first, Elinor Styche. She died, leaving no issue. He married, second, Julian, daughter of Robert Corbett, by whom he had a son, his successor at his death in 1452, Sir Richard Sandford of Sandford, born about 1448. On reaching manhood he married, first Jane Peshall, but that lady dying without issue, he married, second, Jane Bromley, and had several children. He died in 1521, and was survived by his eldest son, Hugh Sandford of Sanford, who married Jane Dod, and had the following children: Richard, his heir; Robert, who survived his nephew George, and continued the family; George; Elizabeth, who married John Barker, Esq. On his death the estate reverted to his uncle, Robert Sandford, Esq., mentioned above, who became "of Sandford." He married Isabel Edgerton. He died in 1598, andwas succeeded by his oldest son, Arthur Sandford, Esq., of Sandford, who married Anne Knyaston, and had several children. This gentleman was a zealous royalist. After an unsuccessful attempt to defend Shrewsbury in 1645, he was made prisoner, with his second son, Robert; he died the same year, and was succeeded by his eldest son. In a lengthy note by burke describing the deeds of his elder brother, Thomas Sandford, who commanded the regiment of Fire Locks, there is a letter taken from the dead body of Colonel Thomas Sandford after the attack on Nantwich, January 22, 1644, as follows:
