Born in 1954, educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, he is married to a fellow Borderer, Lady Elizabeth Kerr.
They have 4 children, Louisa, Walter, Charles, and Amabel.
The Duke took over as Chairman of the Buccleuch Group of companies from his father, but he has been deeply involved in management of the historic family estate businesses, heritage properties and art collections from an early age.
He and his wife made their own family home in Nithsdale in Dumfriesshire where he was a District Councillor for 6 years. Amongst a number of other local interests he was a Director of Border Television, a Regimental Trustee of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers and Chairman, South West, of Scottish Natural Heritage of which he was a main board member from its inception to 1995.
Among a number of other Public Appointments he was National Member for Scotland of the Independent Television Commission, of which he was subsequently Vice Chairman, a Millennium Commissioner and most recently a Trustee of the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
He is a Fellow of the U.H.I. Millennium Institute, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Royal Geographical Society, of which he was a former President.
He was made a KBE in 2000.
Since 2003 he has been President of the National Trust for Scotland.
Both he and his wife are Trustees of the Buccleuch Heritage Trust and the Living Landscape Trust, Charities which have been entrusted with the conservation and education aspects of the historic estate and family properties.
The Duchess, youngest daughter of the 12th Marquis of Lothian, was educated at Woldingham and the London School of Economics from which she has a BSc in Sociology.
She too has been closely involved with the arts and heritage as a former Chairman of Scottish Ballet and one time Trustee of both the National Museums of Scotland and The British Museum.
