"SHERWOOD - LYON - BROWNE - WILLIAMS

                 SHERWOOD

Records of the Sherwood family in England date back to the middle of the thirteenth century. Master William de Shirewode received a charter from Edward I - 3d Kalens, 1274, confirming a previous charter by Henry III, dated October 9, 1266, for certain lands in Shirewode Forest, County Notts. (From Calendar Patent Rolls, 1472. 79 p. 421.) A bishop of Durham, John Sherwood, "walked with Richard III, at his coronation," on his right side, with the Bishop of Bath on his left. John Sherwood was in line for a cardinal's hat, but Richard III died before this honor was procured for his devoted friend. The first Sherwood to come to this country was Thomas Sherwood with his wife, Alice Seabrook Sherwood. They emigrated from England and settled in Fairfield, Conn., in 1634."
