Note:
A list of the principal after-planters of Milford, with their year of settlement in Milford shows "Richard Shute ... 1642". His name is not on the list which shows the house lot, name and amount of land owned by each planter in 1646, but he is on the list of principal after planters, 1646 to about 1660. An early volume of Milford Records, ES:179 says "Shute, Richard. Came to Milford [ ]"; the date is unreadable.
In 1665 Richard Shute was among the patentees of East Chester in 1665, and a freeholder there in 1682. For many years he was recorder of the town.
Dec. 5, 1683 -- Nathaniel Tompkins, John Drake, and Richard Shute are chosen to go into the woods with the Indians and mark out the land within the patent of Eastchester , and to learn what the Indians ask for the land. Capt. Haiden, Philip Pinckney, Samuel Drake Jr., and Moses Hoite are to treat[y] with the Indians in regard to the purchase of this land. The Indian purchase shall be paid according to every man's portion of lands in the last division.
On 10 May 1686 Richard Shute was a witness to the will of Samuel Drake of Eastchester NY. Samuel was the father of Richard's son-in-law Joseph Drake.
On 9 January 1688/89 Richard and Thomas Shute witnessed the will of Philip Pinckney of Eastchester NY. Philip Pinckney's daughter Elizabeth married Daniel Burr --
According to the Boston Transcript, it has been suggested that Elizabeth, wife of Moses Hoyt was a daughter of Richard, "but proof is wanted". This is impossible, for Elizabeth married Moses about 1658-1660, and Richard and Sarah (Sanford) Shute married in 1656.
