About Richard Smyth

His birthdate is an estimate biased on his other documents.

Richard Smyth's parents are unknown at this time and been disconnected from an "Anthony Smith" because there are no credible sources at this time and must of been attached to him baised on mere speculation. Please review the notes about his land holdings and properties in all documentation below. He was a Yeoman and his brother John Smyth, a husbandman.

Richard Smith of Cossington, Leicester, England was the father of Great Migration immigrant Agnes (Smith) Webster.[1] This connection is proven by his will which names his son-in-law John Webster as sole heir and executor. The properties inherited by John and Agnes Webster from her father Richard Smith were sold shortly before their immigration to New England. Though it can be shown there were Smith families living in Cossington from the mid-15th century on, it is uncertain how Richard Smith connects to them. His will names wife's children she had by a previous marriage, Henry and Thomas Babington, and the children of my brother John Smith. His parents and birth remain unknown. Richard comes to light in 1582 when his first wife, Gillian, is buried. For 20 years or so after his marriage with the widow Hulcock he figures in the churchwardens' accounts for modest sums and as filling the not-exalted office of constable; in 1595 & 1602,churchwarden; 1608 joint tenant of a fairsized farm and the following year he was exchanging land he had bought for this farm, and other property. The lands thus acquired descended at his death to his only child, Agnes who had married John Webster.
