He was from Salem County, New Jersey because it is known that the Sparks family had been living there for three generations. However, in the 1750s, he was living in Middlesex County. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Cranbury, as was the rest of his family.
Richard signed his name as a witness to the Will of William Storey, who was a resident of New Brunswick, Middlesex County. Other witnesses were Stephen Warne and Walter Wall. In those days, neighbors and friends who witnessed legal documents were acquainted with each other. Richard Sparks, Stephen Warne, and Walter Wall would become neighbors in the frontier of southwestern Pennsylvania in the "New Jersey Settlement".
In the 1760s, he moved his family to the "Forks of the Yough" in Pennsylvania.
April 1, 1784: a Congressional Act became effective for Pennsylvania to sell unappropriated lands so squatters, including Richard Sparks in the Forks of the Yough, to begin acquiring legal possession of their tomahawk claims.
