Richard Stephenson was born in 1716 in Essex (later Frederick) County, Virginia, the fourth of nine known children and the third of six sons of John Stephenson and Katherine Wiggs. In 1736, when he was about twenty, he married Honora Grimes at an unknown location.[1] She bore him five known children, all sons:
- James Stephenson
- Marquis Stephenson
- Hugh Stephenson
- John Stephenson
- Richard Stephenson
- Richard also had a daughter who was named Elenor.
On 21 March 1765 Richard died of unknown causes in Frederick County. He is buried at Bullskin Presbyterian Churchyard, Summit Point, Jefferson County, West Virginia, USA [2]
Richard was an indentured servant to Mr. Hugh Crawford; served out his contract, marrying Crawford's widow Honora Grimes Crawford.
He learned to survey with the Crawfords from George Washington; Surveyed with the Boones in Pennsylvania. His sons served with George Washington. Washington was a guest in the home of Honora. Crawford was an Indian trader.[3]

"...Richard Stephenson married Mrs. Onora Crawford. She was the widow of Hugh Crawford. ..To the union of Richard and Onora (Crawford) Stephenson were born as follows: John, Hugh, Richard, James, Marcus, and one daughter. Mrs. Stephenson possessed great physical strength, and was a kind and affectionate mother and she died in 1776. Gen. George Washington was a frequent visitor in this home, often taking part in athletic contests with the sons...
