Richard and his Brother Philemon professed religeon and joined the "Hard Side Baptist" in the year 1789.
Philemon became a Statesman and Richard a Minister, who was very punctual in his profession and on one occassion, having no horse and a swollen stream to cross to his church, saddled an ox and rode; and on nearing the stream, overtook a lady on her way to church, a foot, who mounted the ox behind him. They crossed the stream in safety and made their way to the church in good time for preaching.

"In document written by Richard Thomas and now in possesion of Dudley David Thomas, Carrollton, Mo, he states that he was with George Washington at Valley Forge. Richard Thomas served under Captain Lytle (?) and Col. William Taylor from June 1776 to June 1778 in 67th N.Car. troops for which service he recieved pension while living in Ky." see Nat.
