About Richard Ware Mabee
Veteran, 86 Col. Richard Ware Mabee, 86, of Atherton, Calif., died Friday, July 26, 2002, at his home.
Col. Mabee was born Dec. 24, 1915, in Westwood, Calif., to Roy and Allie Ware Mabee.
In 1944, he married Mildred E. E. Huntus of Astoria. She died in 1995.
Although Col. Mabee originally aspired to be a concert violinist, he won an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1936. After graduation in 1940, he fought in World War II in the Aleutian Islands. He then became battalion commander in the 11th Airborne Division in the Philippines. With Japan’s surrender, he took on occupation duties in Japan.
Col. Mabee returned home to be an associate professor and professor of military science at the University of California, and earn his graduate degree in East Europe Studies from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. He was then selected for military attaché duties in Finland. He retired from active duty in 1961 and settled in Atherton in 1962, where, he worked in defense electronics and as assistant director of personnel for San Mateo County.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Marie-Alice DuMabeiller of San Francisco, and Anne Elizabeth and Kazuyoshi Murase of Tokyo; and a grandson, Kazuhide Richard Murase, of Tokyo.
Funeral mass is 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Committal will be at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
In lieu of flowers, Col. Mabee requested that memorial contributions be made to the charity of one’s choice.
