Early Occupation. He worked until 1912 within the field of brewing as a chemical engineer in factories of Bohemia and Bavaria, including the Písek brewery. After the end of the war in 1918 he began to focus on journalistic activity.
During WWI he served in Serbia. In 1915 he had to be released from military service due to his a nervous breakdown. He wrote extensively on the helplessness and ambivalence of a man derailed by war. He was incidentally, homosexual. See his prose (Lítice, Škleb) and his verses (Many Nights, Mesopotamia)
Educated at the grammar school in Písek in 1902 then chemical university - brewing in Prague. During his studies he stayed in Zurich and Aachen (1906-7).
He died of stomach cancer and was buried at the Jewish cemetery in Písek.
In 1973 his tombstone was transferred to the Písek forest cemetery among the Czech graves.
n.b. The Jewish cemetery was extensively vandalised by initially German then subsequently Czech soldiers. There s a large army presence still in the town (2000)
