Richard Williams was the son of George Williams of Prince George County, Maryland. He married Prudence Bates [Beal], and soon after 1750 moved to Guilford, N.C.

He gave his home as a hospital after and during the Battle of Guilford Court House, and forty acres of land for a cemetery in which the dead soldiers were buried. He died of smallpox contracted while nursing soldiers after the battle. He was an ardent Quaker.

Burial: New Garden Friends Cemetery Greensboro Guilford County North Carolina, USA Plot: Richard Williams, b. at Monocacy, Md., in 1726; d. 6th of 5th Month,1781 at New Garden, N.C. He and his wife removed about the year 1752 with their two oldest children to what is now Guilford Co., N.C., but which was then a wilderness. He was the first Quaker settler, and one of the earliest settlers in that county. He gave the land on which the "New Garden Meeting House" stands, and timber tracts. The Battleof Guilford Court House, the last battle of the Revolution, was fought near by, and Richard Williams' house was occupied by the wounded officers. The smallpox breaking out among them, Richard Williams caught it and d. m. 11th of 10th mo., 1746, Prudence Bales,dau. of John Bales or Beals of Monocacy, Md. P.521 Richard Williams, d. 5/6/1781, bur the 7th at New Garden Burial Ground; Prudence Williams, d. 6/25/1815; Silas, b. 8/5/1747, O.S.; Charity, b. 5/6/1750; Jesse, b. 1/13/1753; Richard, b. 9/29/1755; Prudence, b. 3/18/1758; Matthias, b. 12/10/1760; Sarah, b. 5/10/1763; Dorcas, b. 12/16/1765; Ruth, b. 2/8/1768; Mary, b. 7/27/1770; John, b.3/18/1773; Ann, b. 7/7/1775.
