Richard de Trafford lived during the reigns of Kings Henry II (1154-1189), Richard I (1189-1199) and John (1199-1216). In about the year 1200, he received from Hamon Massey and daughter Margery, the whole lordship of Stretford "to be holden to" William de Ferrrars, Earl of Derby. During the Baronial Wars with King John, Richard divided his property between his two sons, Henry and Geoffrey. To Geoffrey went the manors of Catherton and Foxdenton, which remained in the family for many generations. To his elder son Henry, he left Trafford, Stretford and all his lands near Manchester.
