Scrope was a younger son of Henry Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of Masham.

Scrope earned a Doctorate in canon law.[1] He was provided to the see of Coventry and Lichfield on 18 August 1386, and consecrated on 19 August 1386. He was given the temporalities of the see on 15 November 1386.[2] He was consecrated at Genoa.
