About Richardus de Melton

I'm very confident of this line up through Evil John's arrival in Cornwall. There is lots of detail and documentation.

I think there might have been some guess work in figuring who and where he came from. However he did arrive with enough money to build a castle, and there aren't many people with names like Meliton for whom that would have been the case. So I think getting this far is reasonable.

The attempts I've seen at taking the Meliton line back further are unpursuasive, at least to me.

The author of the most persistant one seems to agree:

I "authored" this lineage so to speak several years ago...and wrote a

retraction on this ancestry board as well as my site. I'm sorry to see this

keeps popping up but I hope this statement stays in this board this time for

future researchers.

What it boils down to is Siwate was a slave in the household of a Melton,

he was NOT a Melton. I had a whole page on it on my site a while back. I

run the Melton Surname Resource Center, unfortunately, the past year we've

been moving and building a home so I haven't been able to update it. I've

been out in the country on a ranch without my computer. My computer's out of

storage now and I have been working on getting the site updated again. I

will post the link when it's back up.

The information leading to Siwate de Meltona, from what I've seen, makes

anywhere from 10-20 generations down incorrect and impossible. Each time I

see the name mentioned there are new names surrounding it and I don't see

that as a possibility. The original lineage I "authored" has had several

lines thrown into it by others to make other lines connect to a heritage

that doesn't exist. I know what I originally wrote and I know who added what

to make other lines fit, and have even seen convincing resources thrown in

to appear researched.

I corrected and accepted responsibility for my error of Siwate a while

back but I do not take responsibility for what one publishes whether it be

book or internet without checking resources. And I know for a fact there

are no true resources leading a generation to Siwate. This is one reason I

will not be linking to databases or sites leading to databases with the

lineage on my site.

You might check with Nancy Pratt Melton at http://geocities.com/npmelton/

she may be able to help you with your Melton research or find a researcher

in your line.

Good luck in your research.
