Circa 1777 he served as a volunteer in North America.

He succeeded to the title of 20th Lord Willoughby de Eresby on 12 August 1778.

He succeeded to the title of 7th Earl of Lindsey, co. Lincoln [E., 1626] on 12 August 1778.

He succeeded to the title of 4th Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven [G.B., 1715] on 12 August 1778.

He succeeded to the title of 4th Marquess of Lindsey [G.B., 1706] on 12 August 1778.

He held the office of Hereditary Lord Great Chamberlain between 12 August 1778 and 1779.

He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 12 February 1779.

He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire on 12 February 1779.

Cokayne states that he was addicted to rioting and drunkeness. Walpole writes that he heard that "he has left a legacy to a very small man that was always his companion, and whom, when he was drunk, he used to fling at the heads of the company."

On his death, the office of Hereditary Great Lord Chamberlain and the Barony Willoughby de Eresby fell into abeyance between his two sisters, until on 18 March 1780, the abeyance of the Barony found in favour of Priscilla, the eldest.

He never married.



Robert Bertie, 4th Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven was born on 17 October 1756 at Grimsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England and died on 8 July 1779 at age 22 at Grimsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England, from scarlet fever, unmarried. He was buried on 22 July 1779 at Edenham, Lincolnshire, England and his will was probated in July 1779. [1]
